The Onkyo TX-SR607 is a lot like the lower Onkyo TX models, but this model is more elevated to make way for the added audio and video features. It has the same width so it is good for stacking. The layout of the controls remains unchanged with the different devices to switch from easily found on the lower center of the player. The upper portion of the player where the screen panel is has plenty of buttons along the bottom part, each having a function regardless of the mode used. There is a circular pad that can be pressed in four directions for tuning and preset selecting and a bigger more noticeable knob that can be used to control the volume. On the opposite end lies the power button and on the lower end on both sides are some jacks. There are common jacks like the ones for headphones and microphones are present in the front as well as auxiliary inputs. An interesting connectivity feature that the lower models do not have is the presence of a single HDMI port found on the front.

Actual user review:
“My previous receiver was a 9 year old Sherwood. It started buzzing and I decided it was time for a replacement. I read extensive reviews on several brands and decided that I would purchase Onkyo. I wanted something HDMI based that allowed audio through the HDMI cables. Make sure to run an HDMI cable to your TV from the receiver so that you can do on screen programming. I have 2 sub woofers and the 607 has two output RCA jacks to enable 2 subs. No more RCA splitters. I fired the thing up and was shocked at the sound quality. The thing sparkles and the lows are clean and deep. I adjusted the individual speaker levels with a Radio Shack db meter on an easy to use Onkyo menu. I did not use the calibration system built into the receiver. The menu system is REALLY SIMPLE. Unless you have some REALLY expensive speakers, this is the unit for you. Great sound quality, simple setup and easy menus make this a good choice for the novice or mid range home theater enthusiast. I highly recommend the unit.” – S.Cohan

The Onkyo TX-SR607 is designed to take on more sources than other receivers to suit mid-range home theater configurations. With five more HDMI ports located on the back all kinds of devices can be connected to the Onkyo TX-SR607 to amplify the audio quality and upscale the video while letting the interface provide full control on which devices get routed. Devices that can be used include the latest Blu-rayDVD players, satellite or cable boxes, high definition gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. With so many other jacks available, audio devices can be utilized to the fullest with its quality preserved and in some formats, enhanced as well.

A total of 6 HDMI ports can be used for speedy transmission. In addition to the quick speeds, the SR607 can also be used to upconvert any analog video signals to 1080i which makes the TX-SR607 a better choice for people that demand more than just audio decoding capabilities.

This doesn’t necessarily make the audio features weak as it comes with onboard decoding support for DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. It also has the new PLIIz surround format for much higher dimensions when listening to music or watching the latest high definition movies and the WRAT technology for smoother sounds. Virtually all kinds of audio devices can have a spot at the TX-SR607 including media player devices like Apple’s iPods with the iPod dock optionally available. SIRIUS Satellite Radio support is also included for radio lovers.

Quality isn’t left behind despite the fact that it is a midrange receiver since it has plenty of other audio enhancing options including automatic speaker calibration by Audyssey technologies to correct the sound quality based on the room configuration. The “Music Optimizer” button is used to improve the sound quality for audio signals that have lower bitrates. There are also four audio setting presents for gamers to enjoy when their console is hooked up to the Onkyo TX-SR607.

Bottom Line

The real highlight of the Onkyo TX-SR607 is the great number of connections that is offered. The HDMI options are immense and they are all 1080p and 1.3 enabled. Analog video upconversion is average, but it is still a great addition as the entry-models lack this particular feature.

  • “I purchased the SR607 to replace an old Sony receiver that died. What a difference! Installation was a breeze, setup a no brainer (I used the Audyssey 2EQ automatic speaker setup), and things worked as advertised right out of the box. I have HDTV, DVD, CD, phono(required a pre-amp), and use the receiver for local FM. The HDTV connection is HDMI from the cable box to the receiver, and HDMI from the receiver to the HDTV. It works well. I had heard of problems but found the only one was due to the Comcast DCT6412 III where it won’t stretch the non HD picture size to fill my MD screen. Not Onkyo’s fault at all. One must have for me was Zone 2 control for my outdoor speakers. Onkyo’s Zone 2 is just what I needed, allowing two sources to be used, one for indoors, and one outdoors. Great for a party. So – very quick delivery, worked as advertised right out of the box, and easy setup with great sound. What more can you ask?” – L.P.Roberts (GA,USA)
  • “I previously own the TX-SR605 and recently upgraded to the newest model in its class. I needed more HDMI ports for my HD appliances. After a solid week of owning the 607 model I can honestly say I’m just as happy and possibly happier. The 607 has the same onscreen menu as before but what makes me more impressed was the audyssey microphone for tuning your speakers according to your room setup. The hardware in the new receiver seems to have been more define and precise in its tuning calibration. Once the setup was complete I was amazed on how listening to TV shows broadcasted surround sound. These receivers also work well with the Logitech Harmony Universal remotes. Over all I find Onkyo receivers to be one of the best brands out on the market.” – A.Valenzuela
