Design

The TX-SR508 retains the handsome black fascia that should be familiar with Onkyo receiver owners. The layout is simple and functional. The receiver is flanked by a standby button on the left and a large volume control on the right. The center digital fluorescent display is clear and yet subtle so that it does not affect movie viewing in a darkened room. Below the display is a row of mode selection and source select buttons. A headphone jack, mic input and analog video and audio completes the front face layout.

Connectivity

You get plenty of connectivity options for a budget receiver. There are 4 HDMI inputs and one HDMI output are located at the top row for ease of connection. You also get 2 component video inputs and 4 sets of composite video inputs for low resolution devices. What’s new is a Universal port for your iPod/iPhone and input port for SIRIUS Radio. A full set of color coded speaker terminals occupy the right half. There are no multi channel analog inputs as you are expected to use HDMI for your blu-ray and other hi-def sources. This is after all a 3D-ready receiver.

Actual user review:
“For $350.00, you can’t ask for more. The Audyssey 2EQ Acoustic Room Correction is an awesome, Onkyo did a great job implementing this feature in their receiver. No more guess work when it comes to speaker calibration. I was up and running after 10 minutes, it can’t get any easier than this.” – Evo (CA,USA)

Features

Onkyo has spent considerable effort in getting these new generation of AV receivers as future-proof as they can by including the latest industry standards and features. Here are some of them:

  • HDMI 1.4 Support for 3-D Video and Audio Return Channel – HDMI has fast become the cable of choice for connecting today’s A/V components. The four HDMI 1.4 inputs on the TX-SR508 let you simultaneously connect high-definition sources such as a Blu-ray player, a gaming console, and a cable/satellite tuner. 3D video is the next big thing in home entertainment. As the latest standard, HDMI 1.4 adds 3D support and an Audio Return Channel. Audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner can be sent “upstream” to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.
  • Dolby Pro Logic IIz – As with previous versions of Dolby Pro Logic, this latest version delivers a convincing surround-sound experience from any movie or music source, even a stereo one. On the TX-SR508, Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables you to incorporate two “front high” speakers into your surround-sound set-up as an alternative to the two surround back speakers. The front high channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that helps immerse you even more deeply into your movies and games.
  • 192 kHz/24-Bit Burr-Brown DACs – High-quality Burr-Brown DACs work to optimize analog audio performance. These DACs perform advanced 24-bit signal processing and support sampling rates of up to 192 kHz, all while displaying high resistance to clock jitter and offering a 113 dB dynamic range.
  • Decodes High-Definition Surround-Sound Codecs – The TX-SR508 can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It also handles two “lossy” audio formats: Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio.
  • Audyssey Technology – The TX-SR508 comes with 3 Audyssey technologies that help create the most suitable listening environment for your home. Audyssey 2EQ Acoustic Room Correction tailors multi-channel audio for your home theater speaker set-up by measuring three room positions and applying a resolution filter to the satellite speakers to correct for room acoustics. Audyssey Dynamic Volume automatically compensates for annoying volume fluctuations in audio content – for example, during jarring commercial breaks – while optimizing the dynamic range of your sound. Finally, Audyssey Dynamic EQ maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume.
  • Play Different Audio Sources in Different Zones – With Powered Zone 2, you can enjoy surround-sound entertainment in the main room, while playing back a different stereo source in a second zone equipped with a pair of speakers. Alternatively, you can use the Zone 2 line-out to send an unamplified audio signal to an amplifier (and speakers) in the second room.
  • Universal Port for Connection of Dock for iPhone /iPod or HD Radio Tuner – A proprietary Universal Port located on the rear panel of the TX-SR508 lets you connect an optional Dock for iPhone/iPod or Radio Tuner. If you have both peripheral devices, they can easily be “daisy chained”. A key advantage of the Universal Port is that it accepts video and audio signals through the same cable that sends a power supply from the receiver to the devices. The net result is more connectivity with less cable clutter.

I am willing to say that the Onkyo TX-SR508 is a “perfect” piece of electronic equipment. Quite simply, if you compare all of its features, ease of use, quality of sound, and its price, there is nothing better out there. Some of these features include plenty of ways to connect audio and video. This includes HDMI 1.4, 4 HDMI inputs, 2 fiber-optic audio, many standard audio inputs, and even the ability to output the receiver’s menu and setup displays onto your TV via HDMI. It also has the Onkyo port for the iPod doc. It is possible for someone out there to need MORE that inputs than this receiver has, but it has everything I need in terms of features and future-proof connectivity. Sounds are clear, responsive, and distinct. Voices come out the center loud and clear, and ambient noise and music come out the left and right. I have been to stores with high end receivers on display costing over $1,000. I have listened to them and compared their features. And I honestly believe the features, ease of use, quality and price on the TX-SR508 make this receiver a best choice out there for a home theater system.” – H.Greenberg (CA,USA)

I bought this to replace my Sony receiver. I spent the same amount on the new Onkyo as I did on the old Sony, and the difference is just amazing. The on-screen set up is great. It makes customizing the inputs and the equalizing so easy. And the speaker test really lets you know what where you need to place your speakers. Honestly, this is the best purchase I have made in a long time. I think the 4 HDMI inputs alone make this a must-have over any other receiver similarly priced. I almost bought another Sony instead of the Onkyo, but I am glad I made the switch. Now that I have experienced Onkyo, I think I have made a life long switch.” – A.J.Van Ness (NV,USA)
