Design
We have seen a vast array of AV receivers over the last year or so, and while style is not the most crucial factor, it does affect our 1st impression of the product. In our opinion, Onkyo employs a slightly retro style, slightly unconventional, differing from the sleek ultra modern look adopted by many of the other leading brands. This model reminded us of an old video playing unit. The pre-DVD era styling returns! The Onkyo TX-NR1007 is chunky looking, and features a run of small round buttons along the centerline at the front. The bottom of the panel has been left blank apart from the acknowledgements to the supporting technologies in the form of logo pictures, and the top features a nice sized LED display screen, a rectangular power button and a large control wheel, which we correctly guessed to be the volume knob. Not one single manufacturer that we have met yet has dared to stray from the black coloring and this is no exception.
Features
The Onkyo TX-NR1007 does break convention, and instead of the normal seven channels this packs a whopping 9.2 channels, which we have seen on other manufacturers but isn’t offered on many units. Onkyo have made huge efforts to keep up with the competition, and has very sensibly made this AV receiver network ready. However, its network capability falls slightly off the mark as it connects only via a network cable with no wireless functions. It does mean, though, that you can use the PC to access internet content such as streaming internet radio which is pretty cool.
There are almost literally hundreds of surround sound possibilities so there is little chance of not being able to find at least one to suit your mood, and they take advantage of the many technologies that have been built in to the Onkyo TX-NR1007. Whether you want to take advantage of the Audyssey DSX or the well known Dolby Pro Logic, the choice is yours. The receiver also includes decoding for Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. However, to get the best out of the TX-NR1007, we recommend that you spend time exploring the unit just like you would with any new media device. Only then will you be assured of a complete home cinema experience.
No AV receiver review would be complete without looking at the video capabilities. The clever boffins at Onkyo have seen fit to include the lovely technology from Audyssey that automatically helps balance the speakers in the room, no matter what size or shape the room is, which is really awesome. We were also decently impressed with its picture quality. There hasn’t really been a mid range receiver on the market lately that gives a bad video performance and you certainly won’t be getting one here. On Blu-ray tests and on HD DVD and television tests we found nothing short of cinema clarity – sharp pictures and stunning colors with no distortion or jagging, so ten out of ten there. Older formats played well thanks to the upscaling technologies offered by Faroujda DCDi Cinema, which helps clean up the output and upgrades the picture quality to a much higher standard that it really is.
Bottom Line
Onkyo may not be one of the first companies that spring to mind when you are looking for an AV receiver, but we strongly suggest considering Onkyo as well. This is a cracking little unit and is well worth the money, whether this is your first adventure into the world of AV receivers or whether you are just looking to replace an older piece of equipment. The Onkyo TX-NR1007 captured our hearts with its retro look and huge 9 channel output. In fact, we struggle to say anything negative about this unit.
